Ferryhill, County Durham

Ferryhill & District Angling Club

Mixed coarse and game angling club formed by local mineworkers, controlling two ponds and several river stretches.

Ferryhill & District Angling Club was formed in 1953 by local mine workers, originally known as Area No 4, and was renamed after the local mines closed. The club caters for both pleasure and specimen anglers, with members' catches ranging from minnows to large carp on its ponds, and from gudgeon to sea trout and salmon on its river waters. It controls stretches of the River Wear, River Tyne and River Swale for salmon, sea trout, trout and coarse fish, alongside two named stillwaters. Membership runs annually, with the 2026 season available at 2025 prices, and rules are reviewed and ratified at the club's AGM each year. Day tickets are sold for some river stretches. The club actively manages its stillwaters, including a 2026 fish-rescue operation that relocated carp and silver fish from a lake it had access to into one of its own ponds.
