Sowerby Angling Society
Small, waiting-list-only fly fishing society controlling several miles of the Cod Beck near Thirsk.
Sowerby Angling Society controls approximately four and a half miles of the Cod Beck, a lowland trout stream and tributary of the River Swale, running from the New Bridge in Thirsk downstream to the East Coast mainline railway bridge above Dalton. Fishing is mainly double bank, with single-bank access below Bogs Hill, and the beck is valued for wild brown trout and grayling fished predominantly by fly, with worm and maggot permitted in winter months. Membership is strictly limited to 60 and is currently closed with a waiting list in operation. The society holds an AGM each year to set rules and subscriptions, and arranges exchange fishing days with other local clubs. Part of the water is also made available to Thirsk Angling Club for winter matches under an agreed arrangement.
