The Drennan Specialist Compact 20L Roving Bag is designed for anglers who prefer to travel light like me and move between swims rather than carrying a mountain of tackle. For chub, barbel and general river fishing, its compact size makes a lot of sense. I've used this bag for a few years and its had some hard loving but its still going strong.
Designed for Mobile Fishing
With a 20-litre capacity, this isn't intended to replace a large carryall. Instead, there's enough space for essential tackle, bait and accessories while keeping the bag manageable when walking along a river.
This is particularly useful for chub fishing, where moving regularly and searching different swims can often produce more fish than sitting in one place all day.
The main compartment provides useful storage, while the external pockets make frequently used items easier to reach without unpacking the entire bag.
Build Quality
The Specialist range has a practical rather than flashy appearance, and the Roving Bag follows that approach.
Its tough construction feels suited to regular bank use, while the reinforced waterproof base is particularly welcome. Riverbanks are frequently wet or muddy even during otherwise dry conditions, so keeping moisture away from the contents of your bag is important.
The straps, buckles and zipped compartments also feel designed around regular use rather than occasional fishing.
Build quality: 92/100

On the Bank
Where this bag really works is when you're covering distance.
Carrying a large tackle bag soon becomes tiring when you're moving between swims. The compact Drennan allows you to take what you actually need while leaving unnecessary equipment at home or in the car.
For a typical river session, there's enough room for terminal tackle, scales, unhooking equipment, food and other essentials without the bag becoming unnecessarily bulky.
Portability: 95/100
What We Like
- Excellent size for roving anglers
- Tough, practical construction
- Reinforced waterproof base
- Good selection of storage compartments
- Easy to carry between swims
- Particularly suited to chub and barbel fishing
Worth Knowing
The 20L capacity won't suit everyone. If you regularly take several tackle boxes, large quantities of bait, spare clothing and other equipment, you'll probably want something bigger.
But that's really the point of this bag. It's designed for anglers who deliberately want to carry less.

Its combination of compact dimensions, practical storage and durable construction makes it particularly well suited to river fishing. If your sessions involve walking the bank looking for chub or barbel rather than setting up in one swim for the day, it's an excellent choice.
